I was going to continue with yesterday’s subject; however, I read something today that I thought I would share with you.
I love old books. And, I was reading something that was written of a man who was a lawyer over a hundred years ago. His name was Allen B. Seamen. He was a large man, and known far and wide for his undieing honesty. Back at the beginning of the 20th century, his business colleagues would not hesitate to loan him “$20,000.00 or more without a scrap of writing passing between parties,” which was quite a sum 107 years ago.
Besides being a man of law and business, Seaman was a lover of books, art, and “everything beautiful.” He helped many a person in need. When he was writing out his will, he wrote two of them. One was for of his personal belongings and affairs. The other was of his sentiments for people who would come after him listed in seven “items.” All the listings were an expression of love and care for all humankind in every age group; however, “item 2” is what I wish to share here:
“I leave to children inclusively for the time of their childhood, all, and every, the flowers of the field, and the blossoms of the field, and the blossoms of the woods, with the right to play among them freely, according to the custom of children…And I wish for children, the banks of the brooks, and the golden sands beneath the oceans, and the odors of the willows that dip within the streams, and the white clouds that float high over the giant trees.”
Over a hundred years ago, I doubt very much that men anticipated that the environment would be in jeapordy. They probably did not imagine that their great, great grandchildren would have brooks, rivers, oceans, and air that would be in danger from pollution, or that global warming would be seriously affecting the environment.
What will we wish for our great, great grandchildren? I know we all wish for them a world with a beautiful future with clean, clear oceans, clear babbling brooks and fish filled rivers, and beautiful skies just as Mr. Seaman wanted for us.
