Wow! Starting this month in San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom has banned city departments from buying bottled water for their water coolers. Other mayors, one in Utah and one in Michigan have followed in Mayor Newsom’s footsteps.

Imagine: 45,000,000 plastic water bottles are dumped into landfills every day in the US alone. Following is a quote by Sylvia Carter from Newsday.com: “Even if the water is not killing us, we’ve been had, money-wise. Both Aquafina by Pepsi and Dasani by Coca-Cola depend on supplies of municipal water; we are paying for water that came from the tap – which can end up costing more per gallon than gasoline. In many cases, bottled water in this country has been found to be no safer than tap water; the National Resources Defense Council tested bottled water and found a third of it contaminated with bacteria, synthetic chemicals and arsenic. The EPA’s regulations on tap water are stronger than the FDA’s regulations on bottled water.”

She continued, “The environment is at risk because of our ridiculous water consumption out of plastic bottles. Last month, the Houston Chronicle, in a strong editorial, spoke of “a beast-like mass two times the size of Texas” that slowly “roams and grows.” This is the Eastern Garbage Patch in the northern Pacific Ocean, likely the world’s largest trash dump, according to The Los Angeles Times; 90 percent of this trash is plastic, much of it water bottles. Americans annually consume more than 9 billion gallons of water in plastic bottles, most of them made of polyethylene terephthalate. It takes the equivalent of 18 million barrels of crude oil to create the plastic used in a year’s worth of bottles, according to the Chronicle editorial.” http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/ny-fdsyl5296059jul18,0,494428.column?coll=ny-entertainment-columnists

Unimagineable statistics, aren’t they? An incredible amount of plastic is used in the production and sales of drinks-both water and soda-and mass amounts of crude oil are consumed in the process. The by-products and CO2’s are unleashed into our atmosphere and environment contributing to Global Warming. And, on top of all that, all those bottles do not bio-degrade for 1000 years. What a horrible legacy we are leaving to the children of the world!

I personally don’t agree with drinking tap water in many areas, however. There are some statistics on that which I will get to you in the future. There are other alternatives; safe alternatives with added health benefits that won’t endanger our environment and contribute to Global Warming. Get information at www.be-alkaline.com . Go ahead and request the free book and the newsletter. Both are “need to know” information and pertinent to the times. The only ones to get your info is us & we will never share or sell it-very private.

More next time…

Take care, Live Green, & have a great evening,

Warning given! This information is something that was just e-mailed to me. As a mother and grandmother, I find it imperative to make others aware it. Compact fluorescent Lamps are energy saving, and we are all interested about doing that; HOWEVER, and that’s a BIG however, it has been pointed out that they can be hazardous to your health and home if broken in your home.

The spirally shaped CFL’s are being promoted for replacing the “Edison” incandescent bulb that we have all been using for many years. When an “Edison” bulb needs to be replaced, we simply discard it in our garbage. If one gets broken, we vacuum or sweep up the broken glass and throw it away without worrying about safety except to make sure the glass is well contained so no one gets cut.

HOWEVER, what do we do with the CFL’s if they get broken in your home, office, school, etc., or how do you simply dispose of them when they burn out? Can we simply dispose of them the same way we have disposed of incandescent light bulbs?

The article with a very timely story that was sent to me was written by Joseph Farah of the WorldNetDaily. The article brings to our attention and makes us aware of the potential dangers that Compact Fluorescent Lamps, or CFL’s,  may pose to us and our families. As a mother and grandmother, I was very appreciative of knowing about this information, and I thank Mr. Farah for writing about this subject.

To summarize: According to the Ellsworth American , Brandy Bridges of Maine, an obviously environmentally concerned mother, purchased CFL’s for her home and installed them in her home. One was installed in her 7 year old daughter’s bedroom. As it happened, the CFL broke and shattered on the shag carpet. The package had disposal warnings, so she called the store where they were purchased and was told not to vacuum which would have spread the pollutant, mercury powder. They directed her to the poison control hot-line in her area and was eventually directed to the state’s environmental protection agency.  The latter tested the air in her house for mercury levels. “While the rest of the house was clear, the area of the accident was contaminated above the level considered safe.”

Bridges was warned not to clean up the bulb and mercury powder by herself. They recommended a local environmental cleanup firm at a cost of at least $2,000.00 which would not be covered by insurance. Not being able to cover the cost, her daughter’s room remains unusable and is sealed off in plastic resembling a “hazardous materials accident” to avoid the contaminated material from getting out of the room.

Can you imagine the stress this family has gone through simply for trying to be environmentally responsible? Other people have had similar experiences. What are we to do with these bulbs? Whatever you do, don’t break one in your home. Mercury is a hazardous substance. This is a subject that every parent must be aware of.  At present there is no uniform way to get rid of this hazardous waste material even if the bulbs simply burn out and are unusable. There is no protection for the garbage collectors who may handle these bulbs or any surefire protection from air and water pollution from these bulbs. There are alternatives for energy conservation and ways to limit emitting CO2’s in the environment without having to use these CFL spiral bulbs at present.

One, you can get solar. Check out the bottom of most of my posts to find out how you can get solar for NO investment in a system, installation, or maintenance. Solar is not a dream for your future homes, it can be reality for your home now. Go to www.fuelnews.info to find out more info. Using solar energy just makes sense. It’s clean, abundant energy.

Two, there is an affordable energy saving device for your home where you can save up to 25% on your electricity bills and get an energy tax credit for the purchase. It, also, lowers your EMF’s which has been called the silent health hazard. Go to http://www.skudabeck.myfti.biz , click on Products, and then click on XFactor and EMF Filter in the sidebar. Call my husband, Stephen, at the number on the opening web page for more information.  Discover how you can use the “Edison” incandescent bulbs, still save money on your electric bills, and conserve energy without having a potential mercury health hazard in your home and around your children.

Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow to watch ABC TV’s Global Warming specials starting with Good Morning America and continuing on the ABC evening news, and 20/20-Planet Earth 2007. Check your local listings for time and station.

God bless; Live Green, Donna

There is so much support this month for getting the word out about the environment. Have you seen the slide show on www.msn.com showing  locations around the globe affected by global warming? One shows polar bears hanging on to what almost looks like a giant ice scupture in the ocean. There is no other ice anywhere in the vast waters around this piece of ice the polar bear are clinging to. It is heart rending.

My husband was discussing this same slide show with a lady standing in line at the post office. She, too, saw it and said she shed tears for the situation.  Other pictures show Mt. Kilimanjaro almost totally without snow and ice. Go to the site and see the all pictures yourself. Only if you see them yourself will you appreciate the magnitude of the situation.

Amazingly there are 78,000 people in the US alone over the age of 100.  Longevity is something that everyone is seeking. Imagine, though, if you will, what that means for our children and grandchildren. What will their future be like if we don’t do something NOW? “If” they live to be 100, they will live into the 22nd century, past 2100, which is the year experts say, if we don’t do something now, the environment could reach a point of absolute dire circumstances.

By the way, mark your calendar for for this coming Friday and tune into ABC TV. From Good Morning America to 20/20, TV shows will be focusing, gratefully, on the issue of Global Warming and what we can do for the environment and our home, Planet Earth.

More tomorrow…..Live Green…

God bless, Donna

The news has been full of reports and announcements regarding Global Warming of late. Sydney, Australia, encouraged a period of time for shutting off all electectricty this last week to give awareness to the issue. Some restaurants even offered candle lit dinners to their patrons in order to participate.

Today,  www.msnbc.msn.com has an article at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17889856/ , “Climate Report: ‘Highway to Extinction,'” reporting on “dire predictions include loss of species, increasing scarcity of water.” The report says “global warming has already degraded conditions for many species, coastal areas and poor people. With a more that 90 percent level of confidence, the scientists in the draft report say man-made global warming over the last three decades has had a discernable influence on many physical and biological systems.”

Go there today and read the article. It says that if just 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1 degree Celcius is added to the average temperature, “between 400 million and 1.7 billion extra people can’t get enough water, some infectious diseases and allergenic pollens rise, and some amphibians go extinct… This is the likely outcome for 2020, according to the draft.” If it rises a bit further, the scientists say that depending on the level of greenhouse gases-CO2’s, people will start dying of malnutrition, more diseases, and drastic inclimate weather will result.

Scientists, however, are optimistic because they say the populace will  reduce CO2 emissions that cause Global Warming. As oceanographer and top author of the 2001 report James Mccarthy says, ” The worst stuff won’t happen because we can’t be that stupid.” Let’s all smarten up and “Live Green” for the sake of our grandchildren and the worl in which they will be living.

Health and happiness to you,

Donna

Al Gore just addressed Congress on the subject of Global Warming. He stated that new studies show that the Arctic ice cap was melting more rapidly that previous estimates and that it could completely disappear in as little as 34 years. “The problem is burning a hole at the top of the world in the ice cover…that is one of the principle ways our planet cools itself.” He said that “if it goes it won’t come back on any time scale relavent to the human species.” That is a very serious comment to ponder upon.

For a complete review of the former Vice President’s comments regarding Global Warming and the emissions of CO2’s and the counter arguments, go to www.MSNBC.com. There is a video and article, Gore Takes Warming Warnings to Congress.

As Gore said, the climate issue should not be a partisan or even a political issue. Do what you can to Live Green. It just makes good sense.

Have a great day,

There is ever an on-going discussion as to the legitamacy of Global Warming. There is a video on the web called Global Warming Swindle. It is on “You Tube.” It’s about 75 minutes long and very interesting; however…

I can’t help wonder why Global Warming should be a choice between being a legitmate concern or swindle. Why do we have to choose sides? Why do we have to be in this continuing debate and determine exactly who’s right and who’s wrong?

We have more people than ever before existing on this planet together. We have more industry and we’ve lived so differently in the last one hundred years than ever before. Why not just consider it good stewardship to do whatever we can to take care of “Mother Earth”?

Even if the changes are “normal” as the experts in the above video express,  we know that never before has man contributed so much of the CO2’s going out into the atmosphere as a result of progress in the last century. So whether it be the cause or not, what is the harm in simply doing what we can to help the planet. Let’s just be good stewards of this beautiful place we all call home, be responsible, and Live Green as much as possible.

Pliny the Elder, 28-79 AD, who devoted his life to writing about nature, made this notation:

“It is the Earth, like a kind mother, receives us at our birth, and sustains us when we are born…Earth, gentle and indulgent, ever subservient to the wants of man, spreads his walks with flowers, and his table with plenty, returns with interest every good committed to her care; and though she produces the poison, she still supplies the anti-dote; though constantly teased the more to furnish the luxuries of man than his necessities, yet, even to the last, she continues her kind indulgence, and when life is over, she piously hides his remains in her bosom.”

Let’s treat “her” kindly.

Take care,

Donna

Recently a newspaper article reported that a coal-fired generation plant for electricity was going to be built between the cities of Texakana and Hope,  in beautiful, pristine Arkansas “to offset the higher cost of running natural gas-fired plants.”  They reassure the populace that “the plant would employ the latest technology to limit such pollutants as mercury, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide.”

I empathize with the concern the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and local citizens have for potential pollutants entering the atmosphere such as mercury emissions, acid rain, or Global Warming effects,  plus the use of 6000 gallons of water  a minute out of a local lake. Species such as the bald eagle, the American alligator, the wood stork, the interior least tern, and a rare mussel  called the Quachita rock pocketbook are found nearby and are on the threatened or endangered species list.

Even if the latest technology is used to partially curb impending pollution,  can we be absolutely certain that will be no harm to man or animal in the long run? Is it worth the chance? Economics says it is. We have to ask ourselves, however: Is there another way in the future so that these issues won’t have to be weighed in the balance and we, perhaps, be wrong in the decisions we make, decisions that could be irreversible?

Alternatives exist. They are our future. It is possible to use methods to produce sustainable energy for us to Live Green and not endanger ourselves, our children, our children’s children, or the precious wildlife around us that needs our protection.

God bless-Have a beautiful Sunday,

Donna
