As an addendum to the post of several days ago-April 19th-regarding CFL’s and the danger of having one break in your home and then wonder how to clean it up, I have some thoughts from the Mother Earth Magazine. We have been readers of the journal for a long time. For those of you who have picked up the latest issue of Mother Earth Magazine, you may have read the article on suggestions as to how to save energy and one of the recommendations is switching to the use of CFL’s entitled Bright Ideas for Home Lighting by Megan Phelps.

The subtitle was “Better Lights are the No. 1 way to save money and energy.” There was one section that was entitled Concerns for Mercury. She noted that many are hesitant to use CFL’s since there is a concern of mercury pollution.

There was the statement expressed about the mercury in CFL’s. It was said that ”even if it breaks…most experts say not to worry about the health effects of exposure to the mercury in a compact fluorescent…one CFL contains 4 milligrams of mercury, just a fraction of 500 milligrams found in an old mercury thermometers” This last statement was from the EPA. Interestingly, this was not what was told to Mrs. Bridges in Maine as was reported in the article of which I posted on April 19-See sidebar for April’s issues.

Ms. Phelps wrote the following a few paragraphs later quoting Alex Wilson, executive editor of Environmental Building News and author of Your Green Home: “The take-home message is that when fluorescent have ceased to work properly, they shouldn’t just be thrown in the trash; you should dispose of them through your local solid waste agency.”

“The point is to keep fluorescents out of landfills where there’s always a chance that some mercury could eventually leak out. As more and more people start using CFL’s, the collective mercury could become more of a concern…’But the pros outweigh the cons,’ “says Wendy Reed of the U.S. Governments Energy Star Program.

CFL’s are known to be much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs.  They are said to last much, much longer: 10,000 hours.  At $2 to $3 a piece they could save substantially over a period of years compared to the use of incandescent bulbs.  However, not all cities are set up for their disposal or have convenient drop off-points where the bulbs/lamps can be safely discarded.

Wanting to protect the environment, our own 37 year old daughter with 2 small children and a new baby was about to purchase CFL’s for her home. In the past, she had a lamp get knocked over accidentally-she has a beautiful Great Dane. After reading the article from my other post, she is seriously reconsidering using CFL’s at all: Better safe than sorry. She was, frankly, frustrated that this subject wasn’t being discussed. There’s no dialogue going on about the potential negative aspect of the CFL’s. Being a mother with small children, she expressed that it’s something very important of which to be at least aware of.

So the big question is this: What should we do with broken or non-working CFL’s?  Since mercury is a neuro-toxin, and in light of the article I already posted about, how do we clean up broken CFL’s in our homes, schools, and workplace around the country? It might be well to check with your own city sanitation department or solid waste agancy, do your own research, and have the information to make an informed decision for your own particular personal needs and household. You can, also, go to www.earth911.org, call 1-800-CLEANUP  for more information, or log on to www.energystar.org for their fact sheet.

Because of the high recommendations in magazine/newspaper articles, the web, and on TV for CFL usage, I will continue to do research on this and will let you know of any future findings. Write me should you have any comments or other information on this subject – donnasinfo@gmail.com  . I’d love to hear from you.

Eventually the day will come when LED’s will be available at affordable prices and at a brilliancy that will be conducive for everyday lighting. Until then, if you do use the CFL’s, PLEASE, do be careful .

Till next time…Live Green.

Peace, Donna

This post is dedicated to the upcoming Earth Day tomorrow, April 22nd. I can’t help but put a little spiritual slant to my post since I’m a minister. I’m not going to preach to you; however, in order to truly Live in Joy on this beautiful planet we all call home, our home has to be the best we can possibly help to make it. Why?

Remember the scripture in Genesis 2:15, says.”Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.”

That word “keep” in Hebrew is a very special word. It means to care for something so gently and completely. It means to make sure that no harm comes to it, to cherish it as a mother for her baby. That was the command that God gave to man. That was man’s responsibility, which is now our responsibility collectively.

Let’s all take notice of the things that are happening to our “home” which is the only one we have, and do what we can to “keep it.” What we do to the earth, we do to ourselves. Let’s make sure we do our part and give our children, grandchildren, and future generations to come a beautiful, safe, healthy world in which to live and enjoy life as we have had the privilege of doing.

We can stop Global Warming or at least slow it down so we have a chance to make things better and keep the earth beautiful; however, we can only make a difference by working together and making changes NOW. As one little girl said at the end of 20/20 last night hosted by Diane Sawyer, “Be nice to the earth.” She couldn’t have said it any better. As the scriptures tell us, “And a child shall lead them.”

God bless you,
Pastor Donna

Warning given! This information is something that was just e-mailed to me. As a mother and grandmother, I find it imperative to make others aware it. Compact fluorescent Lamps are energy saving, and we are all interested about doing that; HOWEVER, and that’s a BIG however, it has been pointed out that they can be hazardous to your health and home if broken in your home.

The spirally shaped CFL’s are being promoted for replacing the “Edison” incandescent bulb that we have all been using for many years. When an “Edison” bulb needs to be replaced, we simply discard it in our garbage. If one gets broken, we vacuum or sweep up the broken glass and throw it away without worrying about safety except to make sure the glass is well contained so no one gets cut.

HOWEVER, what do we do with the CFL’s if they get broken in your home, office, school, etc., or how do you simply dispose of them when they burn out? Can we simply dispose of them the same way we have disposed of incandescent light bulbs?

The article with a very timely story that was sent to me was written by Joseph Farah of the WorldNetDaily. The article brings to our attention and makes us aware of the potential dangers that Compact Fluorescent Lamps, or CFL’s,  may pose to us and our families. As a mother and grandmother, I was very appreciative of knowing about this information, and I thank Mr. Farah for writing about this subject.

To summarize: According to the Ellsworth American , Brandy Bridges of Maine, an obviously environmentally concerned mother, purchased CFL’s for her home and installed them in her home. One was installed in her 7 year old daughter’s bedroom. As it happened, the CFL broke and shattered on the shag carpet. The package had disposal warnings, so she called the store where they were purchased and was told not to vacuum which would have spread the pollutant, mercury powder. They directed her to the poison control hot-line in her area and was eventually directed to the state’s environmental protection agency.  The latter tested the air in her house for mercury levels. “While the rest of the house was clear, the area of the accident was contaminated above the level considered safe.”

Bridges was warned not to clean up the bulb and mercury powder by herself. They recommended a local environmental cleanup firm at a cost of at least $2,000.00 which would not be covered by insurance. Not being able to cover the cost, her daughter’s room remains unusable and is sealed off in plastic resembling a “hazardous materials accident” to avoid the contaminated material from getting out of the room.

Can you imagine the stress this family has gone through simply for trying to be environmentally responsible? Other people have had similar experiences. What are we to do with these bulbs? Whatever you do, don’t break one in your home. Mercury is a hazardous substance. This is a subject that every parent must be aware of.  At present there is no uniform way to get rid of this hazardous waste material even if the bulbs simply burn out and are unusable. There is no protection for the garbage collectors who may handle these bulbs or any surefire protection from air and water pollution from these bulbs. There are alternatives for energy conservation and ways to limit emitting CO2’s in the environment without having to use these CFL spiral bulbs at present.

One, you can get solar. Check out the bottom of most of my posts to find out how you can get solar for NO investment in a system, installation, or maintenance. Two, there is an affordable energy saving device for your home where you can save up to 25% on your electricity bills and get an energy tax credit for the purchase. It, also, lowers your EMF’s which has been called the silent health hazard. Go to http://www.skudabeck.myfti.biz , click on Products, and then click on XFactor and EMF Filter in the sidebar. Call my husband, Stephen, at the number on the opening web page for more information.  Discover how you can use the “Edison” incandescent bulbs, still save money on your electric bills, and conserve energy without having a potential mercury health hazard in your home and around your children.

The news has been full of reports and announcements regarding Global Warming of late. Sydney, Australia, encouraged a period of time for shutting off all electectricty this last week to give awareness to the issue. Some restaurants even offered candle lit dinners to their patrons in order to participate.

Today,  www.msnbc.msn.com has an article at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17889856/ , “Climate Report: ‘Highway to Extinction,'” reporting on “dire predictions include loss of species, increasing scarcity of water.” The report says “global warming has already degraded conditions for many species, coastal areas and poor people. With a more that 90 percent level of confidence, the scientists in the draft report say man-made global warming over the last three decades has had a discernable influence on many physical and biological systems.”

Go there today and read the article. It says that if just 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1 degree Celcius is added to the average temperature, “between 400 million and 1.7 billion extra people can’t get enough water, some infectious diseases and allergenic pollens rise, and some amphibians go extinct… This is the likely outcome for 2020, according to the draft.” If it rises a bit further, the scientists say that depending on the level of greenhouse gases-CO2’s, people will start dying of malnutrition, more diseases, and drastic inclimate weather will result.

Scientists, however, are optimistic because they say the populace will  reduce CO2 emissions that cause Global Warming. As oceanographer and top author of the 2001 report James Mccarthy says, ” The worst stuff won’t happen because we can’t be that stupid.” Let’s all smarten up and “Live Green” for the sake of our grandchildren and the worl in which they will be living.

Health and happiness to you,

Donna

Recently a newspaper article reported that a coal-fired generation plant for electricity was going to be built between the cities of Texakana and Hope,  in beautiful, pristine Arkansas “to offset the higher cost of running natural gas-fired plants.”  They reassure the populace that “the plant would employ the latest technology to limit such pollutants as mercury, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide.”

I empathize with the concern the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and local citizens have for potential pollutants entering the atmosphere such as mercury emissions, acid rain, or Global Warming effects,  plus the use of 6000 gallons of water  a minute out of a local lake. Species such as the bald eagle, the American alligator, the wood stork, the interior least tern, and a rare mussel  called the Quachita rock pocketbook are found nearby and are on the threatened or endangered species list.

Even if the latest technology is used to partially curb impending pollution,  can we be absolutely certain that will be no harm to man or animal in the long run? Is it worth the chance? Economics says it is. We have to ask ourselves, however: Is there another way in the future so that these issues won’t have to be weighed in the balance and we, perhaps, be wrong in the decisions we make, decisions that could be irreversible?

Alternatives exist. They are our future. It is possible to use methods to produce sustainable energy for us to Live Green and not endanger ourselves, our children, our children’s children, or the precious wildlife around us that needs our protection.

God bless-Have a beautiful Sunday,

Donna
